JFK Partners: Family & Self-Advocate Support Team

Family & Self-Advocate Support Team

The overall goal of the Family & Self-Advocate Support Team is to insure family-centered and community based perspectives through all JFK Partners activities. Among many other activities, the Support Team provides support for JFK Partners' twenty-member Consumer Advisory Council. The Family & Self-Advocate Support Team is a well-used resource for most of the JFK Partners projects, and includes the following activities:

Consumer Advisory Council

The Support Team initiated, developed, and now provides staff support for the JFK Partners Consumer Advisory Council, which meets six times a year. The twenty Council members were selected because of their strong community leadership and diverse talents. JFK project leaders are invited to present their work to the council, and receive feedback and suggestions for future directions.

Consultation

Members of the Support Team provide: individualized parent to parent support; advocacy in the areas of healthcare, education, transition and employment; consultation and connections to community resources for researchers and clinicians; personal futures planning; and facilitation of various groups and support
organizations as requested.

Major Goals:

  1. Provide opportunities for meaningful dialogue and connection between researchers, educators, clinicians, and the community of families and self-advocates;
  2. Represent the family and self-advocate "voice" in JFK Partners projects;
  3. Represent JFK Partners in collaborative community activities;
  4. Promote family and self-advocate participation in processes and procedures for all clinical, educational, and research activities of JFK Partners;
  5. Model collaboration between families, self-advocates, educators, researchers, and clinicians.
