Training on DC:0-3R - Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood
August 27 - 28, 2009

Day 1: Overview – This session will provide an overview of the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood, Revised (DC:0-3R), which was created to address the lack of and the need for an appropriate system for diagnosing children in the first three years of life.  This diagnostic system focuses on young children’s experience, particularly their emotional and developmental problems and adaptive functioning.  Clinicians who have had training in the past and would like a review of the information are welcome to attend this session only.  Administrators and/or early childhood professionals who are not planning to implement the diagnostic system in practice but would like to understand its basic tenets will also benefit from this overview session only.

Day 2: Intensive Case Discussion - This presentation will prepare early childhood clinicians to utilize the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood, Revised (DC:0-3R), by providing in-depth discussion of the classification system and its five axes.  Participants will discuss cases of young children using a case presentation. The case example will illustrate how DC:0-3R can be utilized in clinical assessments. Clinicians who have received previous training in DC:0-3R and would like an opportunity to participate in case discussion may attend this session only, but need to provide documentation of prior training on the online registration form under “comments”.

Presenters: Karen A. Frankel, Ph.D., Director, Harris Program in Child Development and Infant Mental Health, Director, Kempe Therapeutic Preschool. Dr. Frankel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Frankel is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing for 20 years in the treatment and assessment of children under the age of 6. Dr. Frankel is a national trainer for the DC:0-3R diagnostic system and participates in the coordinated statewide training efforts of the SAMSHA supported BLOOM systems of care grant. She is currently the director of a postdoctoral training program in infant mental health, supervising psychologist for the University of Colorado Hospital Outpatient Infant Psychiatry Clinic, as well as director of a psychiatric day treatment program for maltreated preschoolers. On Day 2, Intensive Case Discussions will be facilitated by DC:0-3 Trainers.

Audience: The overview and case discussion training will focus on assessment and diagnosis of mental health issues in young children. The full Introductory Training (Days 1 and 2) will be useful to psychologists, child psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals who plan to implement the system in their practice. The Overview will be useful to administrators and other early childhood professionals who provide assessment and/or intervention services to young children and families, including pediatricians and pediatric nurses, and physical, occupational or speech therapists and early childhood educators working on interdisciplinary teams.

Registration deadline is August 6, 2009. Pre-registration is required. Early registration is recommended since capacity is limited.

Linking and Aligning Project
September 4, 2008

The main purpose of JFK Partners' Linking and Aligning Project is to integrate children's primary and behavioral health care using the System of Care and Medical Home approach as a foundation. JFK Partners recently hosted four forums for stakeholders with the purpose of developing a care coordination plan/process for the integration of physical and behavioral health. The care coordination plan has three target audiences: (1) families; (2) care coordination and providers of services; and (3) system-level agencies. You can view the Care Coordination Plan and Forum Minutes by clicking the Handouts link below.

In development: An accompanying document to the Care Coordination Plan, the Care Coordination Toolkit is primarily intended for care coordinators and providers of services who are either beginning to explore, have recently begun to build, or want to evaluate their capacity to provide care coordination. It is designed to be used as a comprehensive resource guide when working directly with families in a variety of settings across Colorado. However, families/consumers can use this toolkit as a guide for developing expectations about their care and as an advocacy tool when interacting with their care coordinators or health care providers. Systems-level agencies can also use this toolkit as a document to make policy and programmatic decisions based on the included recommendations. The toolkit is expected to be finalized in early 2009.

Project Updates: With funding for Linking and Aligning ending in early 2009, JFK Partners is exploring initiatives with a similar focus to continue aspects of the Linking and Aligning work. One possibility that is being explored is piloting the toolkit within several different communities/populations. Please contact Jean Cimino (contact information below) to learn more.

Collaborations: Linking and Aliging is thankful to the following agencies for their ongoing support and collaboration: Behavioral Healthcare Inc., Clinica Tepeyac, Colorado Behavioral Health Council, Colorado Children's Healthcare Access Program, Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative, Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Colorado Division of Human Services, Colorado Family Resource Centers - Family Leadership Task Force, The Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health-Colorado Chapter, and the University of Colorado Denver.
