Colorado Partners in System Change: Realizing Self-Determination

Colorado Partners in System Change: Realizing Self-Determination

Self-Determination is a system change movement that provides self-advocates and their families with the empowerment tools they need to create the life of their choosing. A life where they have a voice in who provides the necessary services and supports that may be required to live a full inclusive life in the community. Decisions about where to live, who to live with, where to work and how to spend one’s day are the hallmarks of a self-directed life. Self-Determination empowers persons with disabilities and their families to control the direction of their own lives and to make informed and responsible choices about services and resources.

The purpose of the Realizing Self-Determination Project is to support and enhance the leadership development of individuals with disabilities and their families throughout Colorado. A particular focus of the project is on promoting awareness of self-determination. The project works to increase the capacity of families and self-advocates by providing them with knowledge and tools to be informed decision makers as they self-direct their supports and services. The Realizing Self-determination Project is a continuation of the Colorado’s Partners in System Change grant funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities in 2002.

Major Goals:

1. Promote collaboration with Colorado’s state agency and grassroots system change activities related to family support and self-determination.
2. Provide self-determination awareness training to individuals with disabilities and their families.
3. Provide trainings to families and consumers and advocates on creating a Microboard model.
